Beehive Cobweb Card tutorial

Here is a tutorial on how to make cobweb cards. I have some for sale at my etsy shop.

As far as supplies you’ll need the following:

gouache, brushes, xacto knife, scissors, DR Ph Martin’s Black Star ink, calligraphy pens, bone folder, ruler, compass, cutting mat, glue, water, good strong thin paper like lama-li from Nepal, bristol or other watercolor suitable medium weight paper.

Step 1. Turn on Elton John or Cher or other pop, you need to be happy! Clean work area.
Step 2. Cut a sheet of bristol to 4.75 x 8.5
3. Score at 2.5 & 6. Use bone folder make a fold at scores. The panels should over lap. This is where the latch will come from.
4.  Set compass to slightly less than 1.5″ create a circle for your drawing area. Draw your bee and message n the inside wait for the ink to thoroughly dry before erasing or painting. Use this time to prepare the the “cobweb”. Cut a panel of paper3.4×4.5
5. The begin the “cobweb” in the center. Cut thin ribbons in concentric circles. Alternate between connected sides and connected top and bottom. Make sure your connected points are lined up. See the example below.
You can do this in any shape as long as the connecting points are lined up. I’m working on more complex shapes, though few prototypes are fully successful yet.
6. Create a latch by marking off a one inch line on the back of the right hand side about one half way down use that inch to form a hook. Fold the card, mark off the peak of the hook. Create a slit the size of the hook. Don’t bother cleaning up edges just yet.

7. Position cobweb over image. Don’t worry if the paper’s not perfect, just make sure the image shows up. Glue the cobweb down.
8. Close and cut into loose shape of beehive. Be sure that you trim down all excess paper. If your cobweb doesn’t line up, use this time to get them to match. Paint on bee hive. Add finishing details like message on the back.

Holidays Over???

It’s been a month since my last post. Because of birthdays and visiting family, holidays last from December 1st through January 31st. But I’m almost there. Shwoooo. Look forward to some good old fashioned drawing time in the future.

Mean while, here are some drawings from a free form book for my niece. I wrote it and drew it with out planning anything out because the original stories were just made up while I was tucking her in.

Norton as a person

In case you can’t tell, Norton is a big jerk. He doesn’t have claws, so he slaps people a lot.  He only loves Heidi and treats and hates everything else.
